ITINERARY
Journey deep into the Amazon, from the shimmering lagoons of Cuyabeno to the hidden blackwater rivers, and experience one of Ecuador’s last true wilderness adventures. A journey through untouched rainforest, vibrant wildlife, and timeless traditions.
DAY 1 – Lago Agrio to Grande Lagoon
- Morning Journey: Depart from Lago Agrio for a 2-hour drive to the Cuyabeno River shore (El Puente). Board a motorized canoe to navigate downstream observing wildlife to the Lodge for lunch. Unload boats, settle into cabins with private bathrooms and enjoy a welcome drink. Have lunch.
- Afternoon: Navigate with a motorized/paddle canoe to Caiman Lagoon, offering excellent wildlife observation opportunities, including Monkeys, Parrots, and Macaws. Coming back to the Grande Lagoon, navigate and enjoy the sunset and take the opportunity to enjoy a swim in the Grande lagoon.
- Evening: Going back to the lodge where you go for a short night walk to see what’s on at night.
DAY 2 - Canangueno Lagoon
- Morning: Wake up to the sounds of diverse bird species in the pristine rainforest. After breakfast, navigate in a motorized canoe close to the Canangueno Lagoon. Starting point of your fantastic paddling experience and change canoe. Enjoy the fantastic lagoon in beautiful silence because no motorized canoes are allowed in this lagoon. Observing wildlife and paddling arround and than back to the lodge. Have lunch and a break in the lodge.
- Afternoon/Evening: Navigate with a motorized canoe to the Grande Lagoon, navigate in Grande Lagoon enjoy the sunset and take the opportunity to enjoy another swim in the Grande lagoon. Navigate to spot wildlife such as caimans and other night active animals.
DAY 3 - Siona Community and lower Cuyabeno
- Morning: After breakfast, navigate in a motorized canoe to the Siona Indigenous Community. Participate in the making of Casabe bread, a significant part of their traditional diet. Lunch will include Casabe bread. Engage with a medicine man or “Shaman” to learn about their native traditions and culture.
- Afternoon: Navigate downstream observing wildlife such as birds, monkeys and pink dolphins to Aguas Negras RiverLodge. Accommodation will be in rooms with private bathrooms. Relax.
- Evening: Go for a short night walk and look for wildlife.
DAY 4 – Aguas negras River Lodge
- Morning: Early in the morning we´ll navigate towards a place called “Saladero” or Salt licks (Clay Licks) where parrots of different species show up in large numbers to get the minerals.
- After breakfast: we´ll start with a hike in the marvelous primary Amazon rainforest. During the walk we´ll also have a chance to admire the majestic Kapoc (Ceiba Pentandra) a giant tree that towers over the rest of the forest.
After Lunch it will be a time to relax at the lodge. - Afternoon/ Evening: We´ll navigate slowly up Cuyabeno River looking for wildlife and at night which include nightbirds, Snakes, Bats, Caimans, Frogs and more. Return to the Lodge and Dinner.
DAY 5 – AGUAS NEGRAS RIVER LODGE
- Morning: After breakfast we´ll explore upstream by motorized canoe we´ll navigate towards the “Aguas Negras River” to explore this beautiful black water river. We also go for a short hike in the primary rainforest looking for wildlife. During this quieter and enjoyable journey, you´ll have excellent chances of spotting wildlife. Return to the lodge. Today for lunch we´ll enjoy “Maito” a
typical delicious traditional Kichwa meal. - After lunch: we´ll make our own chocolate using dry Cocoa beans to obtain a delicious homemade chocolate.
- Afternoon/ Evening: By motorized canoe we´ll explore the Cuyabeno River downstream and discover wildlife. We visit the high observation tower, which offers a fantastic view over the jungle ($6.00 per person. Not included), and then enjoy the sunset on the Aguarico River.
After the sunset we´ll navigate slowly up Cuyabeno River looking for wildlife at night which include nightbirds, Snakes, Bats, Caimans, Frogs and more. Return to the Lodge and have Dinner.
DAY 6 – AGUAS NEGRAS RIVER LODGE - AGUARICO RIVER – LAGO AGRIO OR COCA CITIES
- Morning: Early in the morning we´ll go for birdwatching and also other fantastic wildlife. After breakfast we´ll navigate slowly downstream along the Cuyabeno River towards Aguarico River.
Once on Aguarico we´ll navigate upstream to Tierras Orientales located at the shore of the river.
During the way we´ll enjoy a delicious picnic lunch with a Secoya Native family. From Tierras Orientales our car will drive us back to Lago Agrio or Coca (arrival at about 3- 4 pm.). From here you can take a bus or flight back to Quito. - Meals included: Breakfast & lunch.
